Planetary Aspects

An aspect is the angle, or number of degrees between two planets. This can be in relation to each other within a birth chart, also called natal aspects, or the angle of between planets when comparing separate charts that have been overlaid, e.g. in a transit chart (the current planetary position in relation to the natal planets) or a synastry chart (the position of the natal planets in one chart in relation to another).

Planets don’t have to align at the exact degree to be considered in aspect but the closer the degree the more potent the energy will be. There’s a narrow range of degrees between the two planets for the aspect to be considered a significant aspect, this is called an orb.

Major Planetary Aspects

Planets in Conjunction:

This is when two planets are in the same sign. When two planets are in conjunction, this generally represents a strong blend of both planets’ energies.

Orb: 0° + or - 8°

Planets in Opposition:

This is when two planets sit directly opposite each other, at or close to 180 degrees apart.

The opposition is considered dynamic and can be a difficult aspect due to the polarisation of the planets’ energies.

Orb: 180° + or - 8°

Planets in Square Aspect

The square is a challenging aspect and occurs when two planets are 90 degrees apart. The conflict between these energies can be difficult to manage, but if handled well the challenge can bring positive results in the long run.

Orb: 90° + or - 6°

Planets in Trine Aspect

When two planets are 120 degrees apart it’s considered a trine. This is a harmonious aspect where each planets’ energy flows smoothly into the other, providing a balanced and supportive blend. This aspect can be easy to handle but may lack oomph.

Orb: 120° + or - 8°

Planets in Sextile Aspect

Planets are sextile when they are 60 degrees apart. Like the trine but not as strong, this aspect has a harmonious and flowing energy blend.

Orb: 60° + or - 4°
